How to Become a Victim Advocate...Part 2

Did you miss part one? If so please visit How to Become a Victim Advocate...Part 1.

The second day I was in Vegas I got a job once again working for a new company and again I moved up the ranks in a rapid manner. I really enjoyed living in Vegas for a time. Its fun and entertaining and as long as you never go outside in the summer very nice.

But after a very shocking and painful break up with my then BF I decided to move home to be closer to my family. So I packed everything up and moved back to my little small town in Utah.

It never accrued to me that I would not be able to get a job and I would end up living in my parents basement depressed for two years. I had always been able to accomplish anything I wanted to do, so to fail at getting a job and moving on with my life was very hard for me.

Then one day while searching the want ads I see a receptionist job open at the local domestic violence crisis center. I had all the skills they needed so I applied and was quickly contacted for an interview. The interview went amazingly well...I am very personable. Two days later I got the phone call...we really liked you but we are going with another applicant. I was crushed, I actually cried.

Then something strange happened...I got a call the next day from the crisis center. We really liked you and we think you would be a great advocate. We have a position opening up soon but don't want to lose you so we want to hire you to work as a weekend advocate and fill in where ever needed. You will be a night staff person, fill in advocate and fill in receptionist but it is only part time.

I accepted. I didn't care I just needed a job.

But soon I discovered I loved my job. I am not sure love is a strong enough word. I not only loved my job but I enjoyed the work. I didn't mind getting out of bed to go to work in the morning or taking crisis calls in the middle of the night. I appreciated and enjoyed all my coworkers.

Soon the opening occurred and I started working full time as the Justice Court Victim Advocate.

So that is how you go from future microbiologist to victim advocate in 8 years.

    1. It took my 3 years to get up the nerve. I keep saying I am going to do it but never did. Then one day on a whim (and bad work day) I put in my notice to my job and found an apartment on line in Vegas. At that point it was a now or never.

  3. I can't believe I haven't read the end of this story until now. I also somehow didn't remember about Utah. I visited there this Summer... felt like we were everywhere there... a BIG state. We were in Southern Utah, though, from Moab to St. George, primarily... to name the "big" cities we went through....

    1. I can't believe you haven't read it either. I as far away from St. George as you can get and still be in the state of Utah. Seriously that's the South West corner and I am in the North East corner.
