How We Met - Happily Ever After...Not

I meet todays guest blogger, Alene, on Twitter after I asked for guest bloggers. We slowly started talking and I started reading her blog. I was an instant fan. Alene is funny and incredibly honest.

In Alene's own words: I'm positively your everyday ordinary girl. I became aware of my self-doubt and insecurities of feeling just plain ordinary. I began to seek God to know who I was and how I could be comfortable "just being me."  I took that challenge to live my life as "Positively Alene" leaving all comparisons behind this journey to live as He has called me to live...just as myself, Positively Alene!

Thank you, Michael for letting me tell part of my fairytale (not) as we are all thinking about L-O-V-E this month.
I just have one question though, how do you begin to explain the greatest love story and how it all began?

As Valentine’s approaches everyone is singing love. But maybe, just maybe -- some of you out there are blinded - like I once was - by what real love is. I use to think it was fairytale-like with a happily-ever-after-ending every day!

While I don’t crave the romantic chocolate heart-shaped boxes or long-stem roses anymore, I do long for the romance of love. I have finally realized that I should have known from the start that my man was just not the romancing-kind-of-guy.

We met our Junior year of High School. He was stinky sweaty after a football practice and there I stood with my camera capturing moments for the yearbook. It didn’t seem like much then, but somewhere around the Christmas holidays he showed up unannounced at my house. After that day he kept coming back day after day.

You might think that was nice. Any girl would, right? It seemed perfect at first, but then I started noticing many of the guys that were my friends before weren’t coming around. In fact, they would barely even talk to me.

Determined to get to the bottom of the situation, I found out my love was threatening to beat up anyone that talked to me. I know, I should have run for the hills, but I stuck around.

I was his girl for four more years while blind to the whimsy of romance. It wasn't until the day my man proposed that I realized this fairy-tale dream of a cinema-like marriage proposal just might not be all I had dreamed it would be.

Check out this video as I retell of the day we got engaged. It's short I promise! Please let me know if you can relate. I'd so love to hear your story - fairytale or not!

  3. So nice to meet you Michael. My husband and I were introduced by his brother. We met at a bowling alley that had a live band in another room. My husband was there with another girl. He took her home and came back to dance with me.

  5. As a child growing up in a house that was not much of a home, where there was more shouting than loving.. I have to say I thought the fairy tales were great for those that got them. But only true in storybooks. I thought the real world was the world I lived in. And I continued to think that until I was a teen and got to see some of my friends real lives and to my eyes, they had fairy tale lives! I wanted that; I wanted BETTER for my kids than what I had known. And I have that :)

    1. This is the best kind of story. One where were we are in a world we prefer not to be and yet when we have the chance we do it differently. Thanks for sharing - because your story is the real fairytale story - the story and dream comes true! Blessings.

  6. Whenever I am asked to share how I met my husband, I get a pang of guilt...because I feel like I stole him and the plot should be in PG-13!
To sum up a 3 hour movie: I met him through my college roommate. who had followed this boy to college hoping to finally swoon him into a relationship. And he picked me in the midst of me trying to help her succeed.
Thankfully, she practices grace and we are still close friends to this day -- at least it has a happy ending! :)

(Visiting via Alene whom I met through Barbie and I'm so glad I did!)

  7. My husband picked me up in the grocery store! I was s college age cashier, involved with my high school boyfriend still, but wanting to move on. When this handsome older "man" asked me out, I said yes! But, oh, the scandal! Eleven years my senior, divorced...and a Yankee from New York! What would my grandmothers say? Needless to say, he won my grandmas heart, we got her blessing and we celebrated 25 years of wedded "bliss" this past October! I didn't grow up with the fairy tale, but through god's guidance I have managed to create my happily ever after!

  8. LOL - My husband asked me to marry him just as I was getting ready to put the leash on my mom's dog for her 11 p.m. walk. The 5 Love Languages, though, confirmed what I knew all along - He doesn't often love me with words(but when he does they are amazing)or flowers (gifts) but he is a doer - and when you look at what he does - it is a beautiful thing - just not cinema beautiful! Spot-on Post about True Love!
