Music to Sooth the Savage Beast

"People worry about kids playing with guns, and teenagers watching violent videos; we are scared that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands -literally thousands - of songs about broken hearts and rejection and pain and misery and loss."
- Nick Hornby, High Fidelity

You ever have one of those days when you are just not feeling it? That for whatever reason the world makes no sense and you are undeniably sad.

You decide that on your commute home you are going to crack your music and sing along. You then spend the last few minutes of work making a little playlist on your iPod and all the way home you sing along.

Then when you are almost home you just can bring yourself to go home and to be honest you are sadder then you were when you left work. As you ponder the reality of crawling in bed and staying there the rest of the night a song starts and you start singing and then it hits you....you have created the saddest possible playlist of all time. Every song you have selected is about heart break and brokenness.

Its in this moment that you think they need to warning labels on albums (CDS for you younger folks and MP3 tracks for the even younger). They should say do not listen to if you have recently had a brake up, have been drinking, depressed or suffering from "down in the dumps".

I am pretty sure that my mood is due to the weather. I often get like this in January when its icky and we are having a weather inversion that traps all the pollution in my little valley. And its so cold you cant breath and you haven't seen the sun in days. And you know that you have at least 3.5 more months of this weather and its entirely possible that this year you are going to drive your car into a building just for kicks.

I really think I need a happier more up beat playlist....and some serious therapy.

Do you have any suggestion for some up beat happy songs?

  1. Your going to kill me for this list.... But I've put some thought into it specifically for you. I'm adding coomas between songs for the same artists.

Little Big Town - Boondocks, Tornado, Pontoon (They are pretty much my fave right now)
Eli Young Band - Even if it Breaks your Heart (its about persuing your dreams, not breaking your heart)
Pistol Annies - Bad Example, Takin Pills - (They are just fun women that I can just sing to all day)
Zac Brown Band - Jump Right In, Toes, Uncaged (They are generally fun, anything by then will be positive)
Luke Bryan - Country Girl, I don't want this night to end (but you should watch all his music videos... he's HOT)
Dolly Parton -9-5 (because after leaving work this song is fun to sing, and then go watch the movie, because its hilarious)
Darious Rucker - This, Love will do this, True Believers (he's so positive in his song and so in love with his wife)
Gloriana - Wanna Take you home

    Non Country:
    Neon Trees - Animal
Beoynce - Halo (totally underated amazing song)
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros - Home

My problem is I listen to country more than I listen to anything else so its really what I got. Most music disappoints me these days.
