Looking Back at Me

Around this time of year I start getting reflective and start pondering the meaning of life. What does it all mean? I wonder about the direction my life is taking. I know pretty deep stuff for my blog

But lets be honest mostly I am wondering about what The BF is getting me for my birthday and how did I manage to make to the age of almost 36?

After I ponder my "advance" age, I am back to wondering about what The BF will get me for my B-Day (its best not to dwell to long on the age thing). Last year he got me a gift card to the local (now closed) Borders then took me shopping to pick out books. It was awesome he carried my basket and was patient as I picked up book after book and spend more time then I should have trying to decide what books I wanted and then when I went over my budget gave me more money. He is a good guy.

However this year I am not sure what he will do. I have mentioned several things and even offered up a list of choices. He has a tendency to wait until the last minute and then buy jewelry which is good I like shiny things but I want something he spend time thinking about. Is this wrong? Am I selfish?

At almost 36 should I be so self absorbed. Probably not and I don’t think I am all the time I just think on your B-Day gifts should be personal. It’s the one day a year it gets to be about you and people say "Hey I am glad you were born."

Oh crap I just thought about how old I will be in less than 30 days, I am going to go to something drastic now.

  2. I am only 2 years younger than you. I don't want to hear any more nonsense about advanced age! #commenthour

  4. It's your birthday! Being self-absorbed is not only acceptable, but its expected! I hope you get whatever your heart desires!

  5. Happy Birthday! Sometimes the shiny things make a girl feel better then the "thought through" gifts ;)

  6. I think birthdays are very special. It is the one day of the year that you can ask for whatever you want. And just maybe someone will get it for you because it is your birthday. :)

  7. Ack! I'll be 39 soon. That thought alone has cleared my head of gift ideas. LOL

Shiny things are good things :-) Thoughtful things are better things. :-)

  8. If there's something specific that I want, I ask for it. You should get what you want (within reason, of course...) on your birthday :)

  9. Don't do anything drastic! I'm right behind you and I've heard that like a fine wine, the older we get the finer we get. Or at least that's how I think the saying goes! LoL! Enjoy your day!

  12. Sometimes boys are silly. My husband who I have been in a relationship with since 1997 (married in '08) STILL waits until the last minute for my gifts all of the time. It is actually kind of adorable - usually the day before my birthday (sometimes even ON my birthday) he will, all of a sudden, tell me, "I... um... have to go to the Mall. I need a haircut." Well, you would think that he was getting highlights, a perm and then hanging in the salon for a total makeover with the amount of time he disappears on such trips (he has a buzz cut, by the way).

This guy loves me. He thinks about me all of the time. I do believe he does, occasionally, think about what he wants to get me ahead of time, too. He lets time slip away. He's a knuckle-head <3

While our birthdays are super celebrations of us, I remember when I first read the Hobbit that I fell in love with the hobbits' treatment of birthdays: on their birthday, they give a gift to everyone else! Can you imagine? It's a daunting task, but the things is instead of just getting gifts on their birthdays, Hobbits get gifts on every day BUT their birthday!! How wonderful!

So the question is this: does your BF give you "gifts" every other day of the year? Is he wonderful to you and make you feel special the rest of the year? If so, just remember how AWESOME that is!!

With all that said, I hope you get every gift on your list this year!!

And here's a great quote I saw on twitter last night that seems so appropriate for this post:

"I didn't get old on purpose, it just happened. If you're lucky, it could happen to you." - Andy Rooney

  14. Woah I am not telling you how old I am lol.. I think sometimes it is how young you feel. I gave my hubby a list one year. We had not so much bucks, so I added special stuff he could do for me and of course a few gifts. I told him he had a year to do them. He did them all. The best gift ever thoughtfulness. Most fun gift a dinner at our mall and ride around in the carriage. Happy Birthday love your site.

  15. You deserve a nice gift! If the bf can't figure out something nice, you can totally assist him in the process! Happy early birthday!

I even took hom to the autoparts store and showed him the seat covers I want. I told him spinner hubcaps for my car would be fun but he looks at me like I am an idiot. There is nothing wrong with pimping a Chevy Aveo!!!!

  20. Umm, I have a couple years on you, but I get it! 40 is just around the corner for me, and there's a whole lot I have planned on getting done before then, but age is just a state of mind, so don't sweat it and just keep embracing your inner child (she's got the secret of eternal youth, I swear!) I hope the BF comes through with a gift full of thought and love! Keep us posted ;)

  22. Hi, I'm visiting a little late from CommentHour. I have a few years on you and no longer care what presents I get for my BD, but can remember when I did. Enjoy!

  23. Hey, I am six months shy of 50!! Life just gets better, my love... it just gets better (and I am NOT just saying that!)

I think it is a-ok to be self absorbed on your bday. I went on a personal retreat ALONE on my birthday. Some of my close friends were pissed. They wanted to share my day! I was adamant, "My birthday is about what I want, not what YOU want!"

Big hugs and hoping your love button buys you something with thought. Love the Borders gift card!
